Chara Lam

Chara’s main areas of practice are shipping law, commercial and civil litigation, and international arbitration.

Chara has experience in dispute resolution and shipping law. She has acted for major international banks and P&I Clubs in a wide range of maritime disputes, including vessel arrests, collision claims, charterparty disputes and cargo damage claims.

Her practice also covers civil and commercial disputes, where she has advised and represented both companies and individuals in contractual disputes, shareholder claims and winding up applications.

Chara graduated with an LL.B. from the National University of Singapore and was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Singapore Bar in 2022.

Shipping and Maritime Disputes
  • Acted for a major international bank in the enforcement of mortgagee claims arising from the Hin Leong collapse by way of arrest and subsequent sale of five vessels. This included handling the Sheriff’s Statement of Accounts and payment out applications.
  • Acted for an international bank in an Interpleaders trial comprising of over 13 banks related to the Hin Leong collapse to protect the bank’s claim over cargo claimed by multiple parties.
  • Acted for International Group P&I Clubs in relation to the MV Marine Honour oil spill.
  • Acted for International Group P&I Clubs in collision claims, including urgent successful security negotiations and advice on potential arrests.
    Acted for International Group P&I Clubs in obtaining an urgent release of arrested vessels after urgent negotiations with international opponents.
  • Advised International Group P&I Clubs, vessel owners/charterers on charterparty claims and cargo damage claims, including advice on chances of recovery and conducting negotiations with opponents.
  • Assisted as the sole arbitrator in arbitration proceedings involving a claim for demurrage and detention between owners and charterers of the vessel.
Civil Disputes
  • Successfully obtained a Mareva Injunction and Garnishee Orders for the enforcement of an arbitral award for international clients.
  • Successfully acted for a former director in a shareholding and fraud dispute.
  • Successfully acted for a former employee in an employment dispute over restraint of trade clauses in his contract.
  • Advised on and acted for a large commodities company in various disputes with its tenants and successfully negotiated and obtained full payment on multiple occasions for the client.
  • Acted for a claimant in an arbitration spanning 20 years over construction disputes.
  • Successfully acted for a large international company in a commodities sale and purchase dispute.
  • Acted for a Chinese national company in arbitration over a dispute arising out of a Sale & Purchase Agreement for Magnetite Concentrate.
Non-Contentious Work
  • Acted for various buyers, sellers and/or as escrow agents for sale and purchase of various vessels.
  • Advised on and drafted investment contracts.
  • Reviewed corporate authorizations for financing transactions for both local and international companies and prepared corresponding legal opinions.
  • Advised on filing, variation and satisfaction of charges with ACRA.
